Ali the Mermaid

Description

Ever since she could remember, the daughter of the sea king, princess Ali, had grown up hearing horrible stories of creatures that hunted her kind and all of the residents of their ocean kingdom....humans.

and every year that she got older, it would seem that her father would make sure that she understood how important it was that she never went up to the surface world above. For if humans ever saw her, they would surly capture her and kill her.

Ali perfectly understood that humans were dangerous....but that still didn't stop her from wondering about them....an it didn't stop that curiosity about the surface world either.

What was it like? How did things survive up there? And surely there couldn't be humans every where hunting for them like her father made it out to be.

With every passing year, she grew more and more curious until she could stand it no longer; And on the eve of her eighth year, when all in the kingdom were sound asleep, she ventured out from the safety of the undersea palace walls and up towards the surface above her until she finally reached the top.

She hesitated for only a moment, but after working up her courage, she rose her head up from under the waves.

the air was cool, and the ocean breeze whistled in her ears as she took in the sights around her. There wasn't anything in sight, no creatures that resembled humans or these things called 'ships' that allowed them to pass over the sea without drowning.
in fact, it seemed quite empty and silent.

But as she looked up, Ali couldn't help but let out gasp as she rose further out of the sea. For what her father called 'the sky' wasn't bright and blue like she remembered the stories when it was day time, but it almost black if not for the glittering lights all along that seemed to dance above her head as well as reflect around her as the waves were still. And a bigger light from what had to be the moon bathed a soft, pale light and added even more enchantment to this strange new world.

This was what it looked like at night.

In all the wonders the sea offered, there was nothing quite as amazing like this... it just seemed to make this world so much bigger...

And as she looked to her right to see a dark mass were the sea could no longer go, she knew that it had to be what the stories called 'land' where human villages often flourished.

And wanting to get a closer look, she swam towards the beach as fast as she could. But as she popped back up to the surface, her amber eyes widened in surprise and she hid herself as he saw something walking along the pale, sandy beach.

A human!

Though as she made to retreat back to the waves below and hurry home, she stopped.....this human didn't seem to be like the tales at all in fact, he looked like he was just like her.... except he had two strange fins that kept him upright on the surface.

He didn't look at all like the big, violent, ugly faced barbarians she imagined them to be, it fact, he was actually rather...cute... but as she tried to get a closer look, he seemed to be....sad, or angry....it was hard to tell because she was so far away from the beach.

Though the way that he would kick at the waves, and considering how late it was outside, something must have been bothering him.

And after that first night, she always made sure to return in hopes of seeing that human boy again. And in the years that followed, she learned many things about him as she would sometimes see other humans with him. Even as young as he was, he was a strong figure, and obviously had the makings of a great leader one day. He was quiet and contemplative, though when his companions would break out in arguments, he was there to put a stop to it; but he often came to the beach alone, and there she would watch him sparing in the sands as though he were fighting many unseen assailants.

But most importantly, Ali thought, was that she learned what is name.
He was known as Thorin, crowned prince and heir to the Oakensheild throne.

Soon, the princess even brought a most trusted friend on her her secret excursions as she was interested in the human world as much as Ali was. It was wonderful for her to finally have someone to share with and confide in, but they both had to be careful as she knew that they would both end up in hot water if her father ever found out......
